Finding your bearings when you move to another country isn’t always easy, but you’ll be impressed by the transport networks that are available in Spain. There are several airports along the southern coast of Spain, with Malaga being the popular choice among travellers from the UK. Close to the western edges of the area you’ll also find airports at Gibraltar and Jerez.

While you don’t necessarily have to have a car on the Costa del Sol, it will make it easier if you have. The Autopista AP-7 road is the main route through the area, running more or less parallel with the coastline. Distances from Malaga to various towns are as follows:

  • Torremolinos (17km)
  • Fuengirola (32km)
  • Marbella (60km)
  • Estepona (90km)

The region is perhaps best known for waterfront living, but of course you’ll find a number of gorgeous inland villages which offer a golden opportunity to live a traditional Andalusian lifestyle. While some will be served by local bus networks, others will be more accessible if you have a car. Some of the most impressive of these locations are Yunquera, Alhaurin el Grande and Ronda.

There are trains from Malaga that head west as far as Fuengirola, but if you want to go any further west you’ll need to take the bus. The train stops at Torremolinos and Benalmádena along the way, fares are relatively cheap and the trains themselves are modern and clean.

If you’re planning to move permanently to Spain and to bring your UK car with you, there are import regulations which need to be taken into consideration. Permanent residents have to re-register their car with the Spanish authorities and will need to have Spanish registration plates. If you’re not a Spanish resident, you can keep your car as it is as long as you only use it for no more than 180 days in a year.

Here at Simply Costa Developments, we’re happy to advise you on travel information on the Costa del Sol.
