There are a number of issues that need to be taken care of when you move to another country, and of course if you have children you may have to think about their educational needs. If you’re starting a new life in Spain, you’ll be pleased to know the country has a very good education system.
Here on the Costa del Sol, you’ll find a number of excellent schools to choose from. State education is generally free, and there are private schools as well if you wish to pay. It’s also worth noting that international schools are available, and these can help your child’s transition to life in another country. Both Marbella and Estepona are home to international establishments.
Younger children tend to adapt very quickly to a new life and a new language, and of course if they go to a Spanish primary school they won’t be expected to understand what’s going on straight away. The traditional Spanish lifestyle is heavily centred on children and families, so you can expect patience and understanding from teachers and indeed from other pupils.
Education is compulsory in Spain from the age of six to sixteen, and there are opportunities for further education after that. Even if your child goes to an international school, he or she will still learn Spanish surprisingly quickly. Because of this, you may want to consider taking steps to learn the language as well. Pretty soon, you’ll hopefully be thinking and sounding like a local.
