Adapt to the Spanish lifestyle and have a wonderful time of things
The best way to make the most of a new life in Spain is to live like a Spaniard. This is a country that offers a climate that lends itself perfectly to the pursuit of pleasure, so get ready to enjoy everything from friendly bars and exotic restaurants to stunning countryside and spectacular beaches.
The locals like to eat out with friends and family, and they tend to dine later in the evening than most of us. It’s great to get together with others to do the same, and to savour plates of tapas and glasses of red wine as the sun goes down at the end of another hot day. These are the occasions that many people make the move for.
The Spanish tend to think of Britons as a nation of people who are always in a hurry, so if you intend to live like the locals you might have to slow the clocks down a little when you get here. Dealing with the authorities, financial institutions, service providers and legal specialists can take a little longer than in the UK, but that’s all part of the experience.
As you might expect from a nation which has such a hot climate, there are times when the locals try that bit harder to avoid the harsh sun. In August, much of the country seems to almost shut down altogether, and the beaches seem to have as many Spaniards as they have visiting tourists. And of course, you’ll have to get used to many stores closing in the afternoon for siesta time. Most of them open later in the evening, however.
The majority of Spaniards have a favourite bar which they like to call their own. These places act as a kind of sanctuary after a hard day at work, and you’ll find such bars even in the smallest of villages. You can find many British-style pubs in the coastal towns, but to assimilate properly a Café Andalusia will surely be preferable to a Red Lion.
