Monda

Magical Monda is waiting to wow you

While the Costa del Sol is famous for its beaches and seaside resorts, the interior of the region is often unspoilt, tranquil and quintessentially Spanish. One of the prettiest and most iconic inland locations is Monda, a beautiful village that boasts plenty of history and a great range of properties, any one of which could just be your new home.

Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Monda offers a wonderfully slow pace of life to those seeking to get away from it all. You’ll be more than 400 metres above sea level here, and the mountainside terrain helps to make the village undulating and eye-catching.

Road links are good here, with Marbella just 19km to the south and the busy city of Malaga some 45km to the east. Perhaps the focal point of the whole village is the central square, the Plaza de la Ermita, a typical Andalusian gathering point which is home to several excellent bars and restaurants. This is the perfect spot for settling down, sitting back and watching the world go by over a cold beer and a plate of your favourite tapas.

As you might expect from an inland village, plenty of breath-taking countryside is within easy reach from here. The Sierra de las Nieves National Park is within easy reach along the Ojen road, so be ready to take a picnic on a sunny afternoon and savour a very special day.

Get ready to soak up the whole Andalusian experience

As is the case with many other Spanish towns and villages, there are plenty of festivals and fiestas to be enjoyed in Monda. They include the Dia de la Sopa Mondeña in March, the Festival Flamenco Villa de Monda in July and the Feria de San Roque in August. If you intend to assimilate properly into Spanish life, you simply have to love festival time!

The village was home to a historic castle at one time, the Castillo de Monda, and indeed some parts of the original building can still be seen. These days, it’s a high end boutique hotel and much-celebrated restaurant. Some of the locals will tell you the village was the site of a battle fought by Julius Caesar, but this has never been fully verified and remains a somewhat apocryphal tale these days.

There are so many good reasons to consider making Monda your next home. The village offers a wonderful insight into living life as a local, and although it’s well away from the usual tourist trails you will still be pleasingly close to the beaches when you need them.
